Treatment and Management
People with bipolar disorder have some symptoms in common. But treatment can vary from person to person. We all have differences in body chemistry, genetics, and the way we live. So a bipolar disorder treatment that works for one person may not work as well for another.
Once someone is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, treatment usually begins right away. Current symptoms are treated first. Your healthcare provider may recommend an ongoing plan based on the following three things:
- Medicine - Prescription medicine taken regularly can help control depression, mania, or mixed mood episodes.
- Talk Therapy (Psychotherapy) - Along with medicine, talk therapy helps people with bipolar disorder and their families solve problems.
- Education - Becoming an expert on your moods is important in helping you learn how to manage your bipolar disorder.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Most people with bipolar disorder will require treatment with medicine all their lives.
- Some people may have their symptoms controlled with medicine for many years, but then the symptoms come back.
